Day 4

Subject: Follow your gut instinct, [firstname]

Hi [firstname],

You may have heard the expression “gut instinct”. Oftentimes that's how people refer to something they instinctively know is right, but can't explain why.

Recently, scientists have discovered that there is indeed a link between your gut and your brain; in fact, there are as many neurons (brain cells) in your gut as there are in an entire cat's brain! That's why your “gut feeling” is always right, and it's also why good gut health is so important.

To keep your gut in tip-top shape, eat lots of probiotic foods like Sauerkraut. This dish of fermented, finely chopped cabbage is a great source of probiotics, fiber and vitamins. Try to get a version that has not been pickled in vinegar, as that doesn’t have the same benefits.

Similarly, the Korean specialty of fermented vegetables known as Kimchi brings the benefits of probiotic bacteria along with vitamins and fiber. It's great as a side dish with meat, salad or eggs.

Ditch your plain, white bread in favor of Sourdough. This is very fashionable at the moment, and there’s a good reason for that. Made by fermenting the dough, it’s more digestible than regular bread and its energy releases slowly.

Tempeh makes a great a plant-based alternative to bacon. This fermented soy food is becoming easier to find these days, with more and more eateries offering it on their menus and more stores stocking it on shelves.

In addition to probiotic foods, you should also make sure you get enough prebiotic fiber, too. Prebiotics are foods that “fertilize” our existing gut bacteria and encourage the development of a diverse community of microbes.

Keeping your gut healthy can have long-term benefits, too. Research by leading neurologist Dr David Perlmutter has shown a link between poor gut heath and the increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease in later life.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
